CORPUS CHRISTI

The feast of Corpus Christi is a great festival of Catholic faith. All over the world Catholics mark this feast with wonderful displays of devotion including processions, floral tributes, adoration and benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.  We sing wonderful hymns that celebrate the Real Presence of Jesus among us in the Holy Eucharist.   The feast calls us to a deeper devotion to Jesus present in the Blessed Sacrament and to spend more time with him in adoration.

The Eucharist is food for our Christian lives.  Through it we are united with Christ and he shares his life with us.  When we receive the Body and Blood of Christ we are sharing in a special way in the saving passion and death of Jesus.  He loved us so much that he freely gave his Body and Blood on the cross for us.

The Eucharist helps us to become more like Christ who loved us and gave his life for us. From him we learn the essential lessons of Christian love, forgiveness, compassion and service.  By receiving the Body and Blood of Christ in Holy Communion we become the living members of Christ’s body, the Church in the world today.

As we celebrate this beautiful feast and receive the Body of Christ in Holy Communion, we pray that we will become more and more like Christ and bring his love and mercy to the people we meet wherever we go.

CCD THANKSGIVING

On Sunday June 11th the parish will mark the end of CCD for 2022-’23.  The 11 am Mass will be a thanksgiving celebration for all the children, their teachers, and parents.
As you all know, CCD is an important part of the life of our parish.  St. Joseph’s is very happy to assist parents with the important duty of handing on the faith to their children.  We also appreciate very much the parents and others who have volunteered as teachers and assistants in CCD.
This year’s celebration will also focus on the preparations for the 2023-’24 session of CCD.  We invite everyone to the garden after Mass where there will be tables with information about all the stages of CCD.  We will also ask parents to register their children who will be in CCD next year.   There will be information and help for parents and others who may like to volunteer as teachers or assistants.
This year we are making a special effort to have class lists and assigned teachers ready for the beginning of the new school year in the Autumn.  We ask for your cooperation to achieve this goal.
On behalf of the parish, I want to thank Heather, Roselyne and all the teachers and assistants who make CCD possible and help to pass on knowledge of the Catholic faith to the new generations.

Confirmations: This Sunday at 3pm The Confirmation Team would like to thank Msgr. François Gonon, from the Archdiocese of Paris, for officiating the Sacrament of Confirmation to all our 21 young boys and girls, consecrating them as our new “soldiers in Christ”. Our gratitude as well for the parents who brought them forward for Confirmation and who had been supportive from the beginning to the end of the programme through their prayers. Without your support, the task of the Team will be difficult. We pray: “Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of these 21 young boys and girls. Enkindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be recreated, and they shall renew the face of the earth. Amen.”
A reception for our youngsters and their families will follow in the garden after the ceremony.

SUMMER FAIR 2023

This year we will have our parish Summer Fair on June 25.  It is a wonderful opportunity for us to celebrate the end of the emergency phase of the Covid 19 pandemic.  The parish responded very wisely to the pandemic and took the proper precautions to prevent the spread of the virus.  Thanks to everyone for your understanding and compliance with the restrictions needed at that time.  I think the last Summer Fair was in 2019.  Now at last, we can begin a new kind of normal life.  On June 25 we can pull out all the stops and have a wonderful day to celebrate the life of the parish, renew old friendships, meet new people, enjoy some food and win a few prizes.
The Catholic parish of St. Joseph is not just about Sunday worship. It is about being a joyful community of friends who are disciples of Jesus. Indeed, our friendship is based on our attachment to Jesus as our friend, teacher, guide and model.  God wants every human being to flourish and to bloom like a beautiful flower in the garden of the world. It is through our belonging together in the parish community that we grow in the love of God and in friendship with our fellow Catholics.  It is here that we learn how to look at others with compassion and kindness; it is from here that we are sent out to care for and serve people in need.
The Summer Fair is an important moment to express our joy and gratitude for our life together.  Like everything else in this parish, the Summer Fair is made possible by the contribution of so many volunteers, doners, ticket sellers and ticket buyers etc.  I ask you all once again to do your bit and make your contribution to this year’s Summer Fair so that it will be a great success and a memorable day for all.

“GIVE REASONS FOR YOUR HOPE” (1 Peter 3, 15)

St. Peter urges us to “be ready to give reasons for the hope that is within you”.  We are very grateful to God for the gift of faith in Jesus but we are not always ready and able to give reasons for our faith and hope.  We would love to be able to answer the questions of interested friends and colleagues about our faith but simply don’t know how.

We live in a world that values science and knowledge and the internet is buzzing with chatting and debating about every topic under the sun.  Many Catholics are hooked on websites and bloggers who offer every variety of Christianity and Catholicism imaginable.  The vehemence with which opinions are expressed is sometimes frightening.  In some cases, the Gospel of love is turned into a weapon to demolish “heretics”, dissenters, liberals, secularists, traditionalists, progressives, conservatives etc. A great deal of the so-called Catholicism online has become a toxic mix of fanatical opinions, distortions of the truth, insult and hatred, and all in the name of Jesus and his Gospel of love!

It is easy to be misled and confused by the multiplicity of conflicting opinions and points of view on line.  The greatest danger is that someone will be infected by the prejudice and bigotry of angry bloggers.  How should we respond?  It may be a good idea for the parish to offer a course of adult education in the faith for these challenging times.   If you have any views on this, please let us know.

Lectors/Eucharistic Ministers Meeting Sat  10 June at 9:30am-11h30pm.

SING A NEW SONG TO THE LORD!

“To sing is to pray twice”, said St. Augustine and with good reason.  Music and song rise from the abundance of the human heart that is unable to find words to express its feelings of joy, sadness, hope, and gratitude. When words fail us, the poet and the musician in all of us come to life and supply what is missing.

Words constantly fail us in our relationship with God.  How can we express our faith and doubts, our love and our disappointments to one who remains always hidden?  We don’t know how to speak and that is why we are inspired to sing, to dance, to play instruments, to make beautiful music.

Music and song are intrinsic to our relationship with God.  Without them we would be dumb for the most part.  Thanks be to God for the music and song that lifts our hearts and moves our spirits here in St. Joseph’s.  Thanks to the musicians, cantors and choirs that help us to raise our minds, hearts and voices to God every week.  They do a great job but they need your help!

This weekend we are having a recruitment drive for new cantors, musicians and choir members.  We are asking everyone to consider how she or he could contribute to the music ministry in our church.  You don’t need to be a trained specialist but someone with a readiness to help and willing to learn.  Cantors are mostly encouragers.  They give a lead and hope that the congregation will join them.  It might be easier to join a choir and allow your voice to mingle with the other voices.  If you play an instrument, step forward and play your part!

The lives of the disciples of Jesus were changed by the experience of knowing him.
We do not experience him or know him as they did; yet our experience of him changes us too.
As Pedro Arrupe wrote, it influences everything.

Fall in Love

Nothing is more practical than
finding God, than
falling in Love
in a quite absolute, final way.

What you are in love with,
what seizes your imagination,
will affect everything.

It will decide
what will get you out of bed in the morning,
what you do with your evenings, how you spend your weekends,
what you read, whom you know,
what breaks your heart,
and what amazes you with joy and gratitude.

Fall in Love, stay in love,
and it will decide everything.

Those first disciples were filled with light and they were shining!
We often have doubts and questions.
The poet, Mary Oliver, invites us “to go easy” and to draw nearer to “the hope of myself”.

When I Am Among the Trees
~ Mary Oliver ~

When I am among the trees,
especially the willows and the honey locust,
equally the beech, the oaks and the pines,
they give off such hints of gladness.
I would almost say that they save me,
and daily.

I am so distant from the hope of myself,
in which I have goodness, and discernment,
and never hurry through the world
but walk slowly, and bow often.

Around me the trees stir in their leaves
and call out, “Stay awhile.”
The light flows from their branches.

And they call again, “It’s simple,” they say,
“and you too have come
into the world to do this, to go easy,
to be filled with light, and to shine.”

THE LORD IS RISEN
ALLELUIA!

The Lord has risen from the dead and a new era has dawned for humanity and the whole creation.  The old creation was spoiled by sin, suffering and death. Jesus entered the darkness of the old and transformed it with his light.  He healed the suffering, he cast out demons, he forgave sinners, raised the dead to life, and brought good news to the poor.   But then, he too had to endure the sin of evil people, the suffering they inflicted on him, even the horror of crucifixion and death as a condemned criminal.

In his passion, Jesus absorbed all the evil and suffering of the world into himself and transformed them with the power of his saving love.  In the Risen Lord, the love of God has triumphed over death and every evil.  Now there is a new dawn, a new creation. Everything is bathed in a new light and is shining with the beauty of the new creation.  There is a new light in every human being and radiating from every face.

Jesus is risen and with him we celebrate the transformation of the old world into the new creation and the arrival of the Kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven.  Now we can make a new beginning and bring love where there is hate, peace where there is discord, and joy where there is sadness.  It is our privilege and joy to be messengers of this Good News to the whole world.  Alleluia!

I wish you all a very happy Easter
